Mr. Dave Winston Mr. Dave Winston is our permanent advisor for the Dairy Club. Dave is a man of many connections. His role as club advisor and Extension Dairy Youth Specialists helps keep the club connected to the dairy youth of Virginia through different workshops, contests, and meetings. Dave’s active role in the Virginia Tech Alumni Association further benefits the club as it allows for greater interaction between alumni and dairy club members. Additionally, Mr. Winston provides for great networking amongst the club and SUDIA, allowing for great help in promotional matters. He also teaches Dairy Science and Industry, as well as Dairy Information Systems. Dave received his B.S. and his M.S. in Dairy Science from Virginia Tech.
Dr. Bennet Cassell The Dairy Club is very excited to have Dr. Cassell's knowledge on board and to hear all of his new ideas. He currently does most of his work in extension and research. His areas of expertise are the lifetime economic performance of dairy cattle, inbreeding depression, and progeny testing programs. He is the project leader for the Virginia Tech-Kentucky cooperative Holstein-Jersey crossbreeding project. Dr. Cassell received his B.S. and M.S. from Virginia Tech and his PhD from North Carolina State University.
Dr. Katharine Knowlton The members enjoy Dr. Knowlton's leadership because of her concern for their financial well being. She always has information about scholarships and student jobs. Dr. Knowlton teaches Intro to Dairy Science and Livestock in the Environment. Most of her research involves Environmental issues associated with animal agriculture, including nutrient pollution of ground and surface water and odor emission. Dr. Knowlton is also the assistant coach of the Virginia Tech Dairy Judging Team.
Dr. Mark Hanigan The Dairy Club is peased to welcome Dr. Hanigan to the panel.His compassion for students and diverse prospective is sure to make him a student favorite. Dr. Hanigan's research program is focused on identifying regulatory elements that control energy and nitrogen metabolism. He collaborates with scientists in Engineering on strategies to reduce the environmental impact of dairy production.
